If you have a water well that you no longer wish to use, simply abandoning it is not an option. Improperly abandoned wells pose significant risks to health, safety, and the environment. That’s why it’s essential to properly decommission your water well. Well abandonment involves several steps, but we’re here to guide you through the process in the Garden State.
Each state has specific regulations for water well abandonment. In Pennsylvania, an abandoned well is defined as:
"Not in use, not properly maintained, or no longer serving its intended purpose as demonstrated by the permit issued for its construction, or any well which endangers or threatens the subsurface and percolating waters by the intrusion of saltwater or from any other cause, or endangers life."

In other words, any well that is not actively in use must be decommissioned to prevent potential harm. Properly abandoning your well protects others and preserves groundwater resources. To begin the process of sealing and permanently closing your well, you’ll need to work with a professional team.
Step 1: Find an Experienced Team
To responsibly decommission your well in PA, you need a trusted, experienced team. You want professionals who are dependable, reputable, and fully equipped to handle the job. With over 100 years of service in Pennsylvania, C. S. Garber & Sons is your best choice for quality work done right the first time.
Step 2: Removal
Your trusted team will begin by removing all obstructions from the well, including the well pump and all piping equipment. All work must be performed under the direct on-site supervision of a licensed well driller. Rest assured, with C. S. Garber & Sons, a licensed driller is always present.
Step 3: Excavation, Filling, and Sealing
Next, your licensed well drillers will excavate the area around the well casing and remove the casing itself. Once the well is cleared and cleaned, it will be filled and sealed. The well is grouted below the static water level, and disinfected gravel is added, filling it to just below the top of the cutoff casing.
Step 4: Capping and Backfilling
To prevent contaminants from entering the well, a secure cap is constructed on top of the casing. The excavated area around the well casing is then backfilled with soil, restoring the land to its original state.
Step 5: Reporting
The final step is to report the decommissioned well to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Our licensed team will handle all the necessary paperwork to ensure your well is properly abandoned and compliant with state regulations.
